Probiotic Concentration For IBS

In 2016, the British Dietetic Association analysed 35 human randomised controlled trials of probiotics for IBS where only 14 showed meaningful improvements in at least one of the following: general IBS symptoms, pain, bloating, or quality of life. (1)

A daily dose of 10 billion CFU (Colony Forming Unit) of a probiotic or less were used in nine out of fifteen studies. (1)

Interestingly, a concentration of less than 10 billion CFU was used in four of the five largest successful studies. (1)

A separate analysis of studies on probiotics for IBS in 2016 found that low-dose probiotics were more effective in reducing overall IBS symptoms and improving quality of life. (1)

It is suggested that taking 1 billion or 2 billion CFUs daily of probiotics is sufficient to maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract (2).
