IBS can cause a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms. Some IBS sufferers will have diarrhoea as a dominant symptom (IBS-D), some constipation (IBS-C) and others a mixture of diarrhoea and constipation, known as “mixed IBS” (IBS-M). Alongside each type of IBS, sufferers can experience gas, bloating, pain, acid reflux/heartburn and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). There are factors that can influence symptoms such as stress and sleep issues. Diarrhoea or dietary restrictions to manage symptoms can lead to weight loss. Hormones can play a role in IBS symptoms in both women and men. Lastly, unexpectedly, COVID-19 can cause IBS or make symptoms of IBS worse for sufferers.
