What Else?

Tests can rule out conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (crohn’s disease and colitis), coeliac disease and cancer. IBS is diagnosed once these tests come back clear and statistically this is far more likely. However, there are other conditions which have symptoms that overlap with IBS and may not have been ruled out as part of these standard initial tests. These conditions can include (but may not be limited to) bile acid malabsorption (BAM), diverticular disease, gastroparesis and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). If you have been diagnosed with IBS and the usual IBS remedies are not helping you to manage the condition after allowing enough time for them to bed in and your symptoms seem similar to one of these conditions, it is worthwhile asking your GP about these. You may need a different set of tests, although SIBO specifically, is difficult to diagnose accurately. This section provides information about these alternative conditions.
